Home Remedies For Dead Skin On FeetAre your feet looking ugly, rough and dry? Then it’s probably because of dead skin on feet. A beautiful, soft foot always reflects good health. So start taking good care of feet before the dead skin on it leads to cracks, pain, itching and burning sensation.

Dryness and lack of moisture are the main reasons that trigger dead skin. This is caused due to bathing in hot water, feet staying in water for longer period of time, low humidity and harsh soap.

People with diabetes, psoriasis and eczema also experience accumulation of dry and dead skin on feet.

There are many ways to get rid of dead skin on the feet yet natural ways can be safe and cost-effective.

Home Remedies to Remove Dead Skin on Feet:

Here is a list of remedies with natural ingredients mostly available at home. You can try them and maintain proper foot hygiene.

Make sure to follow the instructions and remove the dead skin properly, if not it can lead to thick skin, formation of warts or corns on the feet.

The following methods are best to perform before going to bed. As it helps the feet to soak in the moisturizing cream or oils applied to them.

1. Warm Water

Warm water helps to loosen the dead skin accumulate on the feet. It also helps to relieve the strain from the muscles.

  • Fill up a basin or bucket with lukewarm water.
  • Soak your feet for 20 minutes.
  • Now you can scrub them and rinse off with water.
  • Dry your feet using a soft towel.
  • Moisturize your feet with any lotion or foot cream of your choice.
  • Before going to bed, wear a pair of socks and sleep.
  • Repeat regularly.

2. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt contains magnesium which helps to get rid of toxins from the feet. It is also known to improve the blood circulation in the feet.

  • Soak your feet in lukewarm water.
  • Use a softening soap or washrag to clean your feet (space in between toes, around ankle and bottom of the feet).
  • Pat dry and examine the feet to notice the areas that require scrubbing.
  • Fill up the basin with lukewarm water.
  • Add some Epsom salt (one or two handful should be fine) in to it.
  • Soak your feet until the water gets cool.
  • Remove the feet from water and place them in a soft towel.
  • Let it dry for 10 minutes and then scrub the feet to remove the dead skin.
  • Soak the feet again in lukewarm water for 10 minutes.
  • Remove and pat the skin dry.
  • Apply some moisturizer and wear socks to let the feet absorb the oils.
  • Repeat 3 times a week.

3. Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is known to soften the skin and retain the moisture. It also helps to lessen the accumulated of dry dead skin.

  • Heat some paraffin wax using a double boiler or microwave.
  • Add some coconut oil into it and stir well.
  • Apply the mixture on the feet. It can be a little hot while applying but you will get adjusted to it.
  • Wear a pair of sock on it and Leave it on overnight.
  • Using a soft brush scrub the application and rinse off with lukewarm water.

4. Lemon

The acidic nature present in the lemons which soften the accumulated dead skin cells. They make the skin soft and vibrant.

Process 1:

  • Fill a bucket with lukewarm water.
  • Add some lemon juice in it.
  • Soak your feet in this mixture for 15 minutes.
  • Use a foot brush or pumice stone and scrub your feet.
  • Rinse off with water and pat the skin dry.
  • Apply any moisturize of your choice.
  • Note: You may want to wait until any cuts or trauma has healed before trying this.

Process 2:

This process should be done before going to bed.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of Vaseline and juice of 1 lemon.
  • Wash your feet with soapy water and pat the skin dry.
  • Apply the mixture on the dry areas and heels on your feet.
  • Wear a pair of dry socks. This helps to lock the moisture and prevent your bed sheets from staining.
  • Next morning, exfoliate your feet.
  • Repeat regularly.

5. Glycerin

Glycerin can make your skin softer and whiter.

Process 1:

  • Mix enough amounts of glycerin and lemon juice.
  • Apply the mixture on the feet.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

Process 2:

  • Combine 1 tablespoon each of glycerin and lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of sea salt and 1 teaspoon of rose water.
  • Apply the mixture on the dead skin on your feet.
  • Exfoliate for 5 minutes and leave it on for 20 – 25 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water.

7. Mentholated Rub

It contains many essential oils required to remove the dead skin, soften the skin and fight off the fungus infection.

  • Wash your feet and pat dry.
  • Apply some mentholated rub on it.
  • Pull up socks and leave it on overnight.
  • Wash with water in the morning.
  • Repeat regularly.

8. Vinegar

Vinegar softens the accumulated dead skin and leaves your skin softer and shinier.

Process 1:

  • Wash your feet with soap and water.
  • Add 1 cup of vinegar to 7.57 gallons of water.
  • Stir well and soak your foot in the mixture for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the feet and pat the skin dry.
  • Using a foot scrubber or pumice stone, scrub for few minutes.
  • Rinse off your feet with water and pat dry.
  • Apply petroleum jelly or any moisturizer.
  • Repeat regularly.

Process 2: Using antiseptic mouthwash

  • Wash your feet with soap and water.
  • Add 1 cup each of vinegar and antiseptic mouthwash to 7.57 gallons of water.
  • Stir well and soak your foot in the mixture for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the feet and pat the skin dry.
  • Using a foot scrubber or pumice stone, scrub for few minutes.
  • Rinse off your feet with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly.

9. Oatmeal

Oatmeal removes the accumulated dead skin, softens the skin and moisturizes the skin.

Process 1:

  • Mix enough amounts of oatmeal and rosewater.
  • Apply the mixture on the feet.
  • Scrub the mixture for few minutes and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water and pat dry.
  • Repeat 3 times a day.
  • Alternatively, you can use milk instead of rosewater.

Process 2:

  • Mix enough amounts of ground oatmeal and jojoba oil.
  • Apply thick paste on the feet.
  • Exfoliate for 3 – 5 minutes.
  • Now, leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat 3 times a week.

Process 3:

  • Grind 1/4 cup each of almonds and oatmeal separately.
  • Combine oatmeal powder, almonds powder, 3 tablespoons of cocoa butter (food grade) and 2 tablespoons of honey.
  • Rub the mixture on the feet and let it dry.
  • Now, wear a pair of socks and leave it on overnight.
  • Next morning, rinse off your feet with cool water and pat dry.
  • Don’t apply any moisturizer as cocoa butter has done the moisturizing overnight.

10. Ripe Banana

Banana is effective in removing the dead skin and also helps to moisturize the skin.

Process 1:

  • Blend fully ripe banana into a smooth paste.
  • Apply the paste over the feet.
  • Leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water followed by cold water.
  • Repeat the process daily.
  • Note: For extra benefits, you can add avocado or honey.

Process 2:

  • Combine 1 ripe banana, avocado and powdered orange peel.
  • Using a blender, blend them well.
  • Apply the mixture on the dry sole and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  • Apply any moisturizer.

11. Listerine

It contains Thymol which helps to kill the bacteria and fungus. It helps to exfoliate the accumulated dead skin by softening it.

  • Take enough water in a basin or bucket.
  • Add 1 cup Listerine and vinegar to it.
  • Soak your feet in the solution for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly.

12. DIY Foot Scrub

This scrub exfoliates the accumulated dead skin and moisturizes the skin as well.

  • Mix juice of half lemon, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and brown sugar.
  • Massage the mixture on your feet for few minutes.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off with tepid water.
  • Pat dry and apply moisturizer.
  • Repeat regularly.

13. Baking Soda

Process 1:

  • Combine 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with enough rose water.
  • Rub the mixture on the feet for few minutes.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Pat dry and apply moisturizer.
  • Repeat regularly.

Process 2:

In this process milk softens the skin and baking soda removes dry and rough patches.

  • Take enough amounts of milk (2 – 4 cups) according to the feet.
  • Boil milk until lukewarm.
  • Pour it in bowl meant for soaking feet.
  • Soak your feet for 5 minutes.
  • Now add baking soda into milk and stir well with feet.
  • Massage plenty of the mixture on the feet especially beneath the toes, ankles and other dry areas. You can use hands to massage.
  • After 5 minutes, rinse your feet with warm water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly.

14. Sea Salt Scrub

The harshness of sea salt exfoliates the dead skin and oil moisturizes the skin. In this process you can use lavender oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil.

Process 1:

  • Combine sea salt and any essential oil.
  • Rub the mixture on the feet for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly.

Process 2:

  • Soak your feet in lukewarm water.
  • Leave it for 30 minutes.
  • Combine sea salt and sugar in raw milk.
  • Remove your feet and scrub the mixture over it.
  • After few minutes, rinse off with cold water.
  • Apply foot moisturizing cream of your choice.

15. Honey

Honey locks the moisture in the skill cells, exfoliates the dead skin and softens the skin.

Process 1:

  • Fill a basin or bucket with lukewarm water.
  • Add enough amount of honey into it.
  • Soak for 20 minutes and wash with water.
  • Pat dry and moisturize.
  • Repeat 3 times a week.

Process 2:

  • Combine 1 – 2 tablespoons of raw honey, 1 tablespoon of rice flour, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • Apply this mixture over the feet.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Apply any moisturizer of your choice.

16. Spa to Get Rid of Dead Skin

  • Into a tub filled with tepid water, add some liquid soap.
  • Soak your feet for 20 minutes.
  • Now using a pumice stone, scrub the dead skin.
  • Rinse off with cold water and apply moisturizer.
  • Repeat regularly.

17. Homemade Scrub

  • Combine 2 teaspoons lavender buds, 2 cups brown sugar, 10 drops lavender essential oil and 1/2cup coconut oil.
  • Stir the ingredients well and store in an airtight container.
  • Scoop out enough amounts of the mixture and scrub it on the feet.
  • After 5 minutes, leave it on for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Apply any moisturizer of your choice.

18. Petroleum Jelly

This process should be done before going to bed.

Process 1:

  • Apply petroleum jelly to feet.
  • Wear a pair of socks. This helps to lock the moisture and prevent your bed sheets for staining.
  • Repeat regularly.

Process 2:

  • Combine 1 teaspoon of petroleum jelly and some lemon juice (freshly sqeezed).
  • Massage the mixture on dry and cracked feet for 10 minutes.
  • Leave it on for another 10 minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly.

19. Coffee Foot Scrub

  • Combine 4 tablespoons of fresh coffee grounds, 3 tablespoons each of almond oil or olive oil, seal salt or Epsom salt and ground oatmeal or cornmeal and 2 drops lavender oil.
  • Stir well and massage the mixture in circular motion for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

20. Natural Moisturizing Cream

  • Combine 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 – 3 drops of lemon or lavender oil.
  • Stir well continuously until you find get a milky solution.
  • Apply the lotion as moisturizer to soften and remove the dead skin.
  • Repeat regularly and remember to share the mixture well before use.

21. Sand Paper

  • Massage the coarse side of the sandpaper on dry and dead skin of the feet.
  • Rub in circular motions and don’t change the course of the direction.
  • While doing this white dust will fall from the foot.
  • Blow away the dead skin and wipe your feet with wet wash cloth.
  • Repeat the massaging process again focusing on the calloused area.
  • Wash your feet with mild cleanser and pat dry.
  • Apply moisturizer and wear a pair of socks.
  • Leave them overnight and rinse off next morning.
  • Repeat regularly.

Tidbits to Remember

  • Make sure the tools you use for scrubbing are recommended for feet exfoliation.
  • Avoid scrubbing or any other home remedies if you have cuts, sprains or wounds on the feet.
  • Make sure to clean the exfoliating tools after each use.
  • Hot foot baths are not recommended for people suffering with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease.
  • Don’t forget to apply exfoliation regularly.
  • Apply moisturizer daily after bathing.
  • Wear shoes that help your skin on feet breathe.
  • Control your weight and avoid walking bare foot.
  • Avoid bathing with hot water or cold water. Use only lukewarm water.
  • Avoid tight socks, shoes and other footwear.
  • Don’t attempt to remove dead skin if you are diabetic. As sometimes it can lead to dangerous foot infections. Consult a physician or specialist to take care of the dead skin.

    1. Try 1, 2, or 4th method mentioned above in the article to remove peeling dead skin. After that, massage castor oil or olive oil and leave it to dry completely. Repeat the application daily before going to bed.

  1. It’s not very helpful to say “mix enough of (this) and (that)”. Do you mean “equal amounts”? If so, a bucket of water with “enough honey” would be VERY expensive! And if not, just what DO you mean?? I appreciate all of the ideas, but a clearer idea of what “enough” means for each method would be helpful!
