turmeric for acne

turmeric for acneAcne is one of the most common skin ailments, affecting almost 50 million Americans. As per an estimate, almost $400 million dollars are spent on over the counter acne treatments. Surprising, isn’t it?

Dealing with acne can be upsetting. However, treating them isn’t tough anymore if you cure the root cause.

The root cause of acne is excess sebum/oil production by the sebaceous glands (1). The excess sebum traps the impurities and clogs up the skin pores. This provides the perfect environment for bacterial growth leading to inflammation, redness, and lesions.

Wondering how to control the excess sebum production?

Turmeric is the most effective ingredient in treating acne. Ancient Indians have sworn by its capabilities to heal most of the skin ailments like acne, rosacea, acne scars, dark spots, and others. (2)

Before getting deep into turmeric effectiveness on acne, let’s have a quick look on the reasons for excess oil production. This helps us to judge the capability of turmeric over acne in a better way.

Is Turmeric Good For Acne Treatment?

Most of the turmeric medicinal and therapeutic properties are present due to curcumin compound. Curcumin contains anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer and other properties which are helpful in dealing with many skin and health ailments. (3)

Below let’s see a detailed description of each property that helps deal with acne. We have also gathered relevant scientific studies that support the same.

1. Removes Oil/Sebum

The application of turmeric draws out the excess oil or sebum from deep inside the skin pores. Internal consumption of turmeric regulates the sebum secretion by restricting the sebaceous glands.

Various clinical studies conducted on curcumin and its effect on sebum secretion have shown positive results. (4, 5)

2. Kills the Acne Bacteria

In a study conducted by researchers, the curcumin compound present in turmeric was able to reduce P. acne bacteria growth from 50% to 96%.

Another study has showed that curcumin is 36 times stronger than azelaic acid in treating acne. Apart from that there are many studies that confirm the same. (6)

3. Reduces Inflammation

Curcumin is known for its potential anti-inflammatory properties which reduce swelling and promotes skin healing. Curcumin blocks NF-kB molecule which travels into the cell nuclei and turns on the inflammation.

As per a study conducted on six human trails, curcumin has showed anti-inflammatory activity by exerting anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting different molecules that cause it. (7, 8)

4. Increases Antioxidant Capacity of the Body

Free radicals which are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons cause oxidative damage that is the main cause of many skin ailments like acne, rosacea, blemishes and others.

Due to its chemicals structure, curcumin neutralizes free radicals and also boosts our body’s development of antioxidant enzymes. (9)

5. Manages Insulin

Imbalanced insulin levels are one of the main reasons for hormonal acne. Reducing insulin levels can provide significant improvement in adult acne.

A recent paper has outlined the curcumin potential in reducing diabetes and improving insulin resistance. (10)

6. mTor Inhibitor

mTor (mammalian target of rapamycin) is a protein which regulates cell survival, cell division and cell growth. Excess activation of mTor can lead to excessive cell growth which is also one of the reasons for acne.

Excess production of mTor can lead to more production of keratin and sebum. The combination of these ingredients can block the pores leading to an inflammatory lesion. Turmeric inhibits mTor and various studies have also confirmed the same. (11)

How to Use Turmeric to Treat Acne

Want to know different ways of incorporating turmeric packs into your beauty regimen? Below, we have mentioned various methods with step-by-step guidance.

  • Apply the paste on affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then rinse with water.

  • Chop “Melt and Pour†soap base into small chunks.
  • Using a double boiler, melt the soap base.

  • Upon consumption or topical application of turmeric, if you develop rashes, then avoid using it further.
  • Pregnant and nursing women should consult doctor before taking turmeric supplements.
  • If you are taking any antibiotics then it is better to consult doctor as turmeric can interact with few medications.

General Tips to Take Care of Acne Prone Skin

  • Using a mild cleanser, clean the acne prone skin gently in the morning and before going to bed. While cleansing or exfoliating, avoid scrubbing harshly as it can make the problem worse.
  • Avoid touching, squeezing, pinching or pricking the pimples as it can lead to scarring.
  • While shaving make sure to be gentle and careful.
  • Apply a sunscreen before going out in the sun. Sun’s harmful rays can damage the skin and make it more prone to ailments.
  • While choosing make up, make sure it is non-comedogenic which states it doesn’t clog the pores. And make sure to remove makeup before going to bed.
  • Turmeric can stain clothes, so make sure to wear old clothes while trying the topical treatments.

Apart from that avoid using chemical based cosmetic products and wash your face with lukewarm water before going to bed.

    1. Usually, turmeric or sandalwood doesn’t cause any breakouts. But, if you are experiencing new breakouts due to these ingredients then you can try other remedies mentioned in this article – http://wellness.guide/acne/. Apart from that avoid oily food, reduce stress levels, drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated and consume a nutrition rich food.

      1. Thank you for your response. I will continue with the turmeric and sandalwood powder. I’ve read so many good reviews. I don’t want to give up. I do have another question. Can a toner and moisturizer be used after using the turmeric or sandalwood powder? I hope moisturizing does not defeat the purpose of the two powders. Thank you..

  19. To 54 year old Cindy —

Diet has a lot to do with acne. Acne is an inflammatory reaction to a reaction in your diet(from your gut). My naturopathic dietician told me to avoid gluten (wheat protein – look on the labels of your food you eat to avoid it– turns out I was gluten-sensitive), and sugar(use natural sugars in fruit, maple syrup, honey). When I followed this advice strictly, my acne/rosacea cleared up in a few weeks. I’ve also heard from the book Wheat Belly countries that have diets without wheat, low/no sugar and low/ no dairy do not have acne in their countries. Eat less processed foods, more vegetables, some fruit and some meat. You should also see a naturopath to ascertain if you are sensitive to certain foods that are causing you trouble. It is hard to change to a gluten-free diet(I loved pasta, bread, cookies and cake) but after I did it after 5 days you change your gut flora and after a while you don’t crave these foods anymore. Read Wheat Belly by William Davis, M.D. it is MIND-BLOWING!

  20. I have a question about tumeric paste. My skin is very fair and pale. Will the paste stain my skin orange/yellow? When I cook with tumeric sometimes my hands are stained by accidental handling? I guess I could try a small area to test. Let me know if you have other advice. Using coconut oil alone, perhaps. Thanks in advance.

    1. Yes, the application of turmeric leaves a yellow stain behind. But don’t worry, you can remove it using milk. Dip a cotton ball in milk and wipe the areas with yellow stains. You can also use coconut oil instead of milk. Rinse off with water and pat dry.

  21. I am a college going student and I have more acnes which makes me feel discouraged how can I get rid of them completely??

    2. I used Manuka Honey for 7 days for 30 min. I saw results of pimples shrinking after 4 days. Do a patch test to make sure your skin isn’t sensitive to honey. This is what worked for me. May not work for everyone. I continue to use honey as a face wash. I add baking soda and lemon juice 2-3 times a week. Turmeric and Sandalwood powder as a mask works for me too.

  22. I v pimples n scars on my faces….I want to remove it cmpltly …I v sensitive skin n oily also …soo plzz recommend me smthing …like early treatment …I want to remove it earlier …plzz ….

  23. I have many pimples and scars on my face all over..i am trying everything for it but nothing is working infact i put something it causes more pimples..so will this turmeric paste show good results on me??

    1. Yes, turmeric helps because it contains anti-bacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also restrict the excess sebum production and exfoliate the dead skin cells accumulated in the pores. So, you can use it to reduce the pimples. However, we recommend doing patch test before applying on the entire face just to ensure you are not allergic to it.

  24. Hello, thank you for the remedy. I would like to know if i use multiple remedies, is it ok? For example, if i use lemon juice on my face and wash it. Then after 2 hours applying turmeric powder. is there any harm in this?

    1. Using too many ingredients or methods in a day can make your skin excessively dry which can aggravate excess oil production and make the skin more prone to acne. So, we recommend trying any one method daily until you achieve the results.

  25. Hi, I want to make the turmeric and lemon mask. You wrote 2 drops of lemon juice… Would 2 drops of lemon essential oil work? If not, how can I quantify 2 drops of lemon juice?

  33. I have been using turmeric and honey for my acne. I sometimes add bit of lemon to the mixture and the next day my skin will be glowing. I have come to realize that adding lemon makes a huge difference however I have had bad reactions to using lemon regularly so I use it once in a while. what else can I use regularly with turmeric and honey for a glowing skin other than lemon. Thank you.

    1. It is difficult to tell the exact time frame as it depends on skin type, texture and healing capacity. So, try the method regularly until you achieve the results.

  37. I agree with everyone else that this guide can help cure acne GetRidOfMyAcneQuick.site

I discovered that by not eating anything that contains wheat, milk or sugar, I was able to eliminate most of my acne issues. I used to be on Accutane and all alphabet topical creams, wish I knew this years ago.
