How Does Turmeric Work for Hair Removal?

When turmeric is applied, it sticks to the skin tightly. When it is scrubbed off the skin, it hair gets removed from the roots. The properties of turmeric are known to discourage the hair growth by shrinking the hair follicles. On regular application, it gradually lessens the hair growth completely.


How to Use Turmeric for Hair Removal?

We have listed down remedies using turmeric to remove the unwanted hair. Choose one among them and try to regularly to achieve the same.

After using any treatment, if you want to get rid of the turmeric stains you can remove them by rubbing a cotton ball dipped in milk or coconut oil.

1) Turmeric

  • Combine enough amounts of turmeric and water to make a thick paste.
  • Apply it over the unwanted hair and leave it to dry completely.
  • Scrub the mixture gently using fingers or wet cloth.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat once in 2 days.
  • Alternatively, you can use milk or rosewater instead of water.

2) Turmeric with Raw Papaya

The papain present in raw papaya restricts the hair growth by breaking down the hair follicles.

Process 1:

  • Peel and slice raw papaya into small pieces.
  • Blend some pieces to make a paste.
  • Combine 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric into 1-2 tablespoons of papaya pulp.
  • Apply the mixture over unwanted hair.
  • Massage gently for 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 1 – 2 times a week.

Process 2: with Mustard Oil and Aloe Vera

  • Combine 1/4 tablespoon turmeric powder, 1 tablespoon papaya paste, 1/4 tablespoon gram flour, 4 tablespoons aloe vera gel, 2 tablespoons of mustard oil and 2 drops of any essential oil (optional)
  • Mix well and spread the mixture in the opposite direction of hair growth.
  • Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes or until it completely dries.
  • Take a clean and dry towel, using it scrub off the mixture very gently.
  • Make sure you scrub in the opposite direction of hair growth.
  • Rinse off the area with water and pat dry.
  • Massage the area with olive or any natural moisturizer for a few minutes.
  • Repeat the process 3 – 4 times a week.

3) Turmeric with Chickpea Flour

Chickpea flour absorbs the excess oil and removes accumulated dead skin. It holds the hair on the skin and removes it from the roots while scrubbing it off.

Process 1:

  • Combine 1/2 cup each of chickpea flour and milk.
  • Add 1 teaspoon each of turmeric and milk cream to it.
  • Mix well and apply it on unwanted hair in the direction of hair growth.
  • Leave it on for about 30 minutes.
  • Now scrub off the mixture with fingers in the opposite direction of hair growth.
  • If the scrubbing is hurting a lot, wet your fingers.
  • Later, rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat 3 times a week.
  • Alternatively, you can use yogurt instead of milk.
  • Alternatively, you can use sea salt instead of milk cream.

Process 2: with Almond Oil

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of gram flour (chickpea flour), 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and almond oil.
  • Apply the mixture on unwanted hair and leave it on for few minutes.
  • Scrub off the mixture with wet fingers and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat 3 times a week.

Process 3: with Lemon Juice

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of gram flour, 1 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric.
  • Apply the mixture on unwanted hair and leave it on for few minutes.
  • Scrub off the mixture with wet fingers and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat regularly.
  • For extra benefits, add 1 teaspoon of raw milk.

Process 4: with Wheat Bran

  • Combine 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric, 1 tablespoon each of gram flour, wheat bran and yogurt.
  • Mix well and spread the mixture on unwanted hair.
  • Leave it on for 20 – 25 minutes or until it completely dries.
  • Wet your fingers and gently scrub off the mixture.
  • After scrubbing for 3 minutes, rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times a week.

4) Turmeric with Sesame Oil

  • Combine equal amounts of turmeric and sesame oil.
  • Apply it over the unwanted hair and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Scrub the mixture gently and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the once in a week.

5) Turmeric with Indian Nettle

Indian nettle contains antimicrobial, anodyne, emetic, anthelmintic and antiparasitic properties. When it is mixed with turmeric, it becomes an effective method to remove unwanted hair.

  • Crush few Indian nettle leaves to make a thick paste.
  • Combine 1 teaspoon into it and few drops of water.
  • Apply the paste to unwanted hair and leave it to dry completely.
  • Peel off the paste and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

6) Turmeric with Sea Salt

  • Combine 5 tablespoons of sea salt and 6 tablespoons of ground turmeric.
  • Add 5 tablespoons of milk to the mixture and stir well.
  • Wash the area with soap water and apply the mixture over it.
  • Leave it to dry for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process every day until you see the results.
  • Alternatively, you can use rose water instead of milk.
  • After rinsing off the mixture, if you want to remove the turmeric stains, use cotton ball dipped in witch hazel.

7) Turmeric with Sugar

  • Combine 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of sugar.
  • Boil the mixture until it forms sticky sugar syrup and let it cool down.
  • Add 2 tablespoons each of lemon juice and turmeric into it and stir well.
  • Apply the mixture in the direction of hair growth.
  • Scrub off the mixture in a circular motion for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times a week.

8) Turmeric with Black Gram Flour

  • Combine 1 tablespoon of black gram flour, 1 teaspoon of yogurt and pinch of turmeric.
  • Apply the mixture in the direction of hair growth.
  • Leave it on to dry completely.
  • Peel it off and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat daily.

9) Turmeric with Milk Cream

  • Mix enough amounts of turmeric and milk cream.
  • Rub the mixture on unwanted hair.
  • Let it dry completely, scrub off the mixture with wet fingers.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly.

10) Turmeric with Honey

  • Combine 1 tablespoon each of turmeric and honey.
  • Apply a thick coat of the mixture on unwanted hair.
  • Let it dry completely for 20 minutes and rinse off the mixture with water.
  • Use this process 2 times a week.

11) Turmeric with whole Wheat

  • Combine equal quantities of turmeric with whole wheat flour.
  • Add enough amounts of sesame oil or coconut oil.
  • Mix well and apply the paste on unwanted hair.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Soak your fingers or washcloth in water, wring out the excess and scrub the application with it.
  • Later rinse off with cold water.
  • Repeat the process once in a week.

12) Turmeric with Coconut Oil

  • Combine enough amounts of turmeric and coconut oil.
  • Apply the paste on unwanted hair and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Exfoliate the mixture with wet fingers or wet washcloth.
  • After 30 seconds of exfoliation, rinse off with cold water.
  • Repeat regularly.

13) Turmeric with Corn Starch and Egg White

  • Combine 1/4 teaspoon of egg white, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 egg white and 1/2 teaspoon corn starch.
  • Mix well and spread in the direction of hair growth.
  • Let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
  • Repeat once in a week.

14) Turmeric with baking Soda

Apart from hair removal, this process also works for ingrown hairs.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder, several drops of jojoba oil and enough amounts of water to make a thick paste.
  • Apply it on unwanted hair and leave it on for 10 minutes.
  • Wet a washcloth and scrub in a circular motion.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat 2 times a week until you see the results.

Tips and Precautions to Remember

  • For more effective results, steam the area to open up the pores.
  • Repeat the process regularly to achieve the results.
  • Kasturi manjal turmeric or wild turmeric is known to provide more effective results. If you don’t have it, you can use turmeric as well.
  • If you are allergic to turmeric, stop using it.
  • Patch test before trying regular treatments.
  • If turmeric application leaves stains, using a cotton ball dipped in milk, coconut oil or witch hazel to remove them.

    1. The time period usually depends on the thickness of the hair, level of hair growth, strength of hair follicles and other factors. So, we recommend trying it regularly until you achieve the results.

    1. The methods mentioned in this article don’t prevent the hair regrowth instantly. However they will reduce the hair growth by shrinking the hair follicles gradually.

  3. will any of the processes above be able to remove thick coarse hair also. And do we need to exfoliate before doing any of this?? Lastly,does this takes the place of having to shave instead. Thank you
