Treating Hemorrhoids with Olive Oil

Olive Oil For HemorrhoidsAs per a study conducted by Cleveland Clinic, almost 10 million Americans suffer from hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids also known as piles occur when veins present in anus or rectum are inflamed or swollen. There are two types of hemorrhoids – internal and external.

Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum and external hemorrhoids develop just below the skin around the anus.

Factors that contribute to piles are – gravity, constipation, low fiber diet, food allergies, obesity, lack of physical activity, prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, indiscriminative use of laxatives, family history and heavy lifting.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids

  • Bleeding during bowel movements
  • Irritation near anal region
  • Urge to bowel movement when there is no stool
  • Blood clots or lumps around the anus

If hemorrhoids are left untreated or unchecked, they can lead to complications like tissue death, strangulated piles, chronic blood loss and colorectal or anal cancer.

Fortunately, we have simple home remedies to deal with hemorrhoids. Olive oil, aloe vera, potato, apple or coconut oil can be used to treat hemorrhoids at home. Let’s have a look at olive for hemorrhoids in detail.

Is Olive Oil Good for Hemorrhoids?

  • Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe the area and reduce the swelling.
  • Olive oil application increases the elasticity of blood vessels which reduce the trauma of passing of hard stools.
  • Consumption of olive oil improves the bowel movement functionality as it contains mono-saturated fatty acids.
  • It provides relief from the itching caused by hemorrhoids.
  • It shrinks the hemorrhoids.

How to Use Olive for Hemorrhoids?

There are different ways of using olive oil for treating hemorrhoids at home. Choose one method as per your convenience and try it regularly to get relief.

1. Olive Oil

Process 1:

  • Consume 1 teaspoon of olive on an empty stomach.
  • Repeat the process daily.
  • Alternatively, dip a cotton pad in olive oil, wring out the excess and place it on the hemorrhoids. Replace the application twice in a day.

Process 2: Ozonated Olive Oil

Ozonated olive oil is said to heal the hemorrhoids problem naturally. It cleanses the area and delivers oxygen directly which stimulates the healing. It reduces the swelling and discomfort.

  • Apply some ozonated olive oil directly to the wound.
  • Repeat the application 2 times a day.

2. Olive Oil with Plum Leaves

This process provides relief from the pain, swelling and other discomforts caused by hemorrhoids.

  • Crush and remove juice of few plum leaves.
  • Add the juice to olive oil and stir well.
  • Apply the mixture on hemorrhoids.
  • Repeat the process daily 2 times.

3. Olive Oil with Ispaghol husk

This process is said to show a difference in 3 – 4 days.

  • Combine 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 2 teaspoons of ispaghol husk.
  • Stir well and consume it slowly.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times a day.

4. Olive Oil with Lavender Oil

Lavender oil contains antibacterial and pain-relieving properties. It helps in providing relief from itching, burning and swelling caused by hemorrhoids.

  • Combine few drops each of olive oil and lavender oil.
  • Using a Q-tip, apply the solution on the affected area.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times a day.

5. Olive Oil with Turmeric

Turmeric reduces the inflammation, stops the bleeding and acts as a healing agent. It also helps to prevent further formation of hemorrhoids.

  • Combine olive oil and turmeric to make a thick paste.
  • Apply the paste on the anal region.
  • Allow it to dry completely.
  • Repeat the process as often as needed.
  • Alternatively, you can slightly warm the mixture.

6. Olive Oil with Garlic and Vicks

  • Mince 3 garlic cloves and add it to 2 – 3 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of vicks vapour rub and mix well to form a paste.
  • You can apply it directly on the anal area. Or dip the cotton ball or pad in the mixture and place it on the anal area.
  • Repeat the process daily before going to bed and remove the application in the morning.

Note: Right after the application, you will experience burning sensation for 20 – 30 minutes. It will be followed by a cool menthol sensation for about half an hour. By morning, your symptoms will be reduced to a maximum extent.

7. Olive Oil with Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the swelling. It prevents the hemorrhoids from getting complicated.

  • Combine 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 2 – 3 drops of tea tree oil.
  • Apply the mixture on the anal area.
  • Repeat the application 3 times a day.

Note: Don’t forget to patch test the mixture before applying it on anal area. As the tea tree oil is very strong, it may cause any irritation or burning sensation. If it is causing any side effects then avoid using it, if not you can continue using it.

8. Olive Oil with Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains many nutrients which provide relief from the hemorrhoids symptoms.

  • Combine enough amounts of olive oil and lemon juice.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply on the anal area.
  • Leave it to dry completely.
  • Repeat the application 3 times a day.

9. Olive Oil with Cypress Oil

Cypress oil controls the bleeding and helps in healing the hemorrhoids.

  • Add 2 drops of cypress oil into 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  • Apply the mixture on the anal area.
  • Leave it on to dry completely.
  • Repeat the application 2 – 3 times a day.
  • For extra benefits, add 2 drops of lemon juice.

Note: Before applying the mixture on the anal area, patch test on your arm. If it is causing any irritation or burning sensation, then avoid using it. If not, then you are free to use it.

Tips and Precautions:

  • Eat foods rich in fiber. Doing so will help in softening the stools which avoid strain on existing hemorrhoids.
  • Soak regularly in warm water for 10 – 15 minutes. This provides relief from the pain and stops the bleeding.
  • Clean the anal area regularly with plain warm water to keep it clean.
  • After bowel movement, don’t wipe with dry toilet paper, use wet ones instead.
  • To get relief from the pain and swelling, apply cold compress on the anal area.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep the stools soft.
  • Straining or holding your breath while passing the stools creates more pressure on the veins. So avoid straining.
  • Don’t hold the urge to pass the bowel movement. Go as soon as you feel the urge.
  • Exercise regularly to prevent constipation.
  • Avoid sitting or standing for long hours.
  • Don’t overuse laxatives, as it can also cause hemorrhoids.

Hi everyone, this is Rajee!

I live the beautiful city of Baltimore, where my husband works.

I’m from India. I have been visiting India on and off for past few years and my mom was an inspiration for me to start this site. She has a wealth of knowledge on home remedies for a large number of health problems, and we grew up in an environment where frequent visits to the doctor just wasn’t logistically or financially feasible.

Despite this, she managed to raise a family of healthy kids, and my goal here at Home Remedies for Life is to pass on some of her knowledge of natural remedies.

You can try 1 or 3rd method mentioned above in the article. Apart from that increase the intake of fiber in you food because it softens the stools and avoids strain on the hemorrhoids.

Apply some extra virgin olive oil on the cracks at regular intervals to get relief from the anal fissures. Apart from that instill some olive oil into the anus. This helps to soften the stools and ease the motion passage through rectum. This will help to heal the fissures quickly and effectively.
